For decades, Finland has maintained a policy of neutrality and non-bloc status. But after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the proximity to the aggressor country forced it to reconsider its status. Finland simultaneously with Sweden applied for NATO membership. Two-thirds of the member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance have already ratified the necessary protocols. Also since August 18th, a ban on crossing the border by Russians who have tourist Schengen visas issued by Tallinn came into force in Estonia. But the government’s decision to close the Estonian border to tourists was explained by the Foreign Ministry as saying that Russian taxpayers visiting Europe are funding Russia’s war in Ukraine.
